Write something about yourself
Updated: Apr 8, 2023
It's common for me to go through the day and not remember what I did. I know that I got up in the morning, worked, ate something, took a walk, and went to bed. There is no story to tell, and yet it went on for several hours. Tal Ben-Shahar, an Israeli psychologist, suggests that in such situations it's a good idea to start a diary in which we describe our daily life, make reflections and rediscover a relatively monotonous life. The truth is that every day is different, you just have to pay attention to it.
In addition, journaling encourages us to make plans, set goals, and focus more on what we are doing at any given moment. Somewhere in the back of our minds we remember that we want to describe it later, which can encourage us to be more attentive. I've found that writing a few sentences about today makes me take each day more seriously. This seemingly boring daily life always has something to offer us if we focus on seeing the value in just being and experiencing. Introducing such a practice into our lives can be a way to discover new perspectives and understand how many valuable things are happening around us every day.

Another technique recommended by Tal Ben-Shahar is the practice of gratitude. This involves regularly writing down three things for which we are grateful each day. It can be something small like a delicious breakfast or nice weather, but it can also be important accomplishments or events we've been waiting for. With this exercise, we begin to appreciate what we have in life and focus on the positive, even if it's not easy in difficult moments.
According to Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor specializing in positive psychology, writing about positive experiences and reflecting on what we are grateful for can increase our overall happiness and life satisfaction. "Gratitude is a powerful emotion that can improve our relationships, enhance empathy and reduce aggression, and increase our overall well-being," she says.
Keeping a journal is a simple and effective way to discover the value in everyday life and improve our focus and motivation. It's also a great way to track our progress, goals, and plans so we can see how much we've accomplished and how much we have left to do. No matter how boring our day may seem, writing about it allows us to discover new and valuable experiences. By taking a few minutes a day to journal, we learn to appreciate what we have and enjoy life on a whole new level. That's why I encourage everyone to try journaling - as Tal Ben-Shahar said, "Writing about our experiences and feelings helps us understand who we are, what's important to us, and where we're going.
